Although U.S. workers are notorious for not taking as much vacation time as their European counterparts, 24 percent of respondents in a recent survey said they can't afford to take vacation in 2011, up from 21 percent last year.

Chicago-based CareerBuilder found that although another 12 percent say they can afford a vacation, they don't have plans to take one this year.

More than 5,600 workers participated in the CareerBuilder survey, which was conducted in January and March of this year.

While most workers will take a vacation, three in 10 plan to work while on break and 30 percent plan to call the office while they're out.
