The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud (CAIF) is calling the shooting of insurance fraud investigators Rhett Jeansonne and Kim Sledge a "senseless tragedy of the first order."

"Investigators deal with people whose emotions may be volatile," said Dennis Jay, executive director of the CAIF. "The potential for violence comes with any knock on any front door, even for seemingly routine interviews simply to gather facts.

Jeansonne and Sledge, who worked with the Louisiana Department of Insurance, were shot and killed June 7 while trying to retrieve information from an insurance agent.

"The CAIF extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Louisiana insurance department, its employees, and the families of both Rhett and Kim," Jay said. "They died trying to make Louisiana a better and safer state."
