A former Calif. business owner pleaded no contest to three misdemeanor charges after pressuring an employee to use medical insurance rather than file for workers' compensation following an on-the-job accident.
Grant Adam Lemeur owned Dream Car Solutions, an auto detailing business based in West Sacramento, Calif. He has never offered workers' compensation insurance to his employees, something business owners will do to avoid a hike in their insurance premiums. When one of Lemeur's employees broke his thumb at work in April 2010, Lemeur urged the employee to file a fraudulent health insurance claim rather than seek workers' compensation.
Now, it has been nothing short of a nightmare for Dream Car Solutions. Lemeur was charged May 3 on counts of health insurance fraud, failure to have workers' compensation insurance, and failure to properly account for payroll taxes. The court ordered him to pay $10,808 in fines as well as reimburse the employee's health plan for medical care and the Employment Development Department for back taxes.
