A 5.3 magnitude earthquake has struck Spain about 218 miles south-southeast of Madrid, causing several deaths and toppling buildings, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS says the quake struck at 12:47 p.m. EDT today at a depth of about a half-mile.
The BBC is reporting that the quake is near the city of Lorca, Spain. Other early reports put the death toll at seven.
There are reports of a second earthquake in the region at magnitude 4 or higher. The Associated Press says two quakes struck in quick succession.
