HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — Montpelier Re Holdings Ltd. said Wednesday it expects to lose roughly $126 million for claims related to last month's earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
The insurer said the pretax loss estimate is based on the forecast of industrywide insurance losses of about $25 billion.
The company said its actual losses might differ significantly as more claims are filed. Uncertainty surrounds the catastrophe because of continued threats from the Japanese nuclear plant damaged in the earthquake.
Montpelier Re and its subsidiaries provide property and casualty reinsurance and insurance products.
Shares of Montpelier Re rose 16 cents, or 1 percent, to close at $18.50.
