Judge James F.X. Doyle sentenced former Suffolk County, N.Y. legislator George Guldi after he pocketed an insurance check paid out by AIG. Guldi was given two sentences, 3 to 9 years for second-degree grand larceny and 1 to 3 years for third-degree insurance fraud, to be served consecutively.
On Feb. 16, Guldi was convicted after pocketing the payout rather than having it held in escrow to fund the reconstruction of a house that had burned down in 2008. He was ordered to pay $863,473.30 in restitution.
One insurance adjuster, Bruce Schlosser, was granted an order of protection, after testifying against Guldi, as he felt threatened by Guldi. At one point, Schlosser referred to Guldi as "Bernie Madoff with guns."
And that is not all Guldi has to think about. He faces two more indictments: one for failing to file an income tax return for Jan. 1, 2006 to Oct. 15, 2009, the other alongside 12 others for grand larceny, scheme to defraud, conspiracy and more after an alleged mortgage fraud in Suffolk County involving $80 million. These cases are still pending.
Guldi is currently being held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Leonard Lato, Guldi's attorney, plans on filing an appeal.
The former lawyer, who was disbarred after his conviction, will consequently be barred from leaving his cell for at least 4 more years.
