The use of social media in claims investigations is a tool that many adjusters, attorneys, and SIU professionals are failing to use effectively, says Michael Beagle, investigator and CEO of the computer forensics and investigative services company DiscoveryPro.

Mr. Beagle has teamed up with Mr. James Lewis, an attorney at the law firm of Lane Alton & Horst, LLC to teach insurance professionals how to use social media sites to better conduct insurance claims investigations.

The two regularly present an educational seminar on the same topic, entitled, "All That Twitters: A Guide to Cyber Communications for Insurance Fraud Investigators and Their Attorneys," which has been featured at prominent insurance fraud-related conferences around the country.

In addition, the two have also developed a 15-point cyber screening questionnaire for investigators to use in the information-gathering process.

Recently, we spoke with Mr. Beagle to find out how claims professionals and investigators can better use social media sites to help them in their day-to-day jobs, the sites they should be looking at, examples of success stories, and of course, the legal issues involved when using the information you find.
