The economic downturn has an increasing number of New Yorkers looking for a quick solution to financial problems in the form of owner give-ups. The New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud (NYAAIF) reports schemes involving everything from abandonment of vehicles to arson, leading them to investigate all suspicious claims more aggressively.
One New York City woman was arrested last year for insurance fraud after filing a claim for theft of her car, which was later found by police. The car had been damaged by fire, and authorities determined that the vehicle, which comes equipped with a system that only permits operation with a programmed key, was not forcibly entered, and there was no evidence that the systems had been defeated in an attempt to steal it.
The NYAAIF is working in cooperation with the Fraud Bureau and other law enforcement agencies to curb the costly criminal behavior.
