Marcus Brown, owner of Acme Elevator, is going down after being convicted for theft and a workers' comp fraud scheme.
Brown owned Ohio-based Acme Elevator Service and Repair when one of his workers was injured on the job. The employee required a wheelchair lift due to his injuries, so Brown submitted a service invoice for the installation of a lift--three times.
Unfortunately for Brown, the third time isn't always a charm, and a data analysis by his insurance company caught the repetitive submissions, triggering an investigation. After interviewing the injured worker, authorities discovered that a lift had never been installed, despite the three separate invoices that Brown wrote, and the $5,500 in reimbursement that he received for that service.
Brown was charged with theft, and workers' comp fraud. He was sentenced to three years of community control with basic supervision, $5,500 in restitution, a $2,500 fine, and payment of all court costs. Even after serving his sentence, there will be little he can do to repair his good name.
