The Loss Executives Association (LEA) will be celebrating its 80th anniversary at the upcoming 2011 conference in Tampa, but the focus of that meeting will be on the future of the industry.

The annual conference, which offers a variety of workshops covering adjuster ethics; implications of the changes to the International Building Code (IBC); deposition do's and don'ts; IT innovations in claim systems; and more, will be held from February 2 to 4 in Tampa, Fla. Registered attendees will be able to choose from an extensive program, and each presentation will have something different to offer.

The discussions will begin with an exclusive executive forum on February 2, during which important topics–including how claim resources have been affected by the economic downturn, how to manage staffing counts "when the wind doesn't blow" and attract fresh talent, and adjuster licensing issues–will be weighed in a "no-holds-barred" environment. The executive forum is restricted to insurance company property loss management personnel only, so that managers may discuss current issues within a closed, private session.

General sessions are open to all registrants, and will begin on February 3 following the annual meeting and business meeting. These sessions will provide guests with opportunities to gain important skills and information that will pertain to everyday operations and how to excel in the current industry climate. Participants will be able to explore the current state of claim management while expanding their overall knowledge of the industry.

The first of the general sessions, "Working Together Across the World – the Differences That Make the Difference," the appointed speakers will examine how the claim process varies from country to country in an ever-expanding global market. The presentation will highlight the most problematic issues, ranging from miscommunication to culture clash, in order to enable participants to improve their own claim process as they move forward in an expanding market.

During the case law update, "Top Property Loss Topics of 2010," attendees will be able to brush up on the most recent court decisions concerning compliance, application of policy exclusions, the period of recovery, and other rulings impacting claim handling and coverage determination.

Following the case law update, Robert P. Hartwig, Ph.D., CPCU, president of the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.), will look back at the long list of challenges that property loss professionals have faced over the past 80 years, and what they might face in the years to come. During this keynote presentation, guests will revisit some older practices, and take a look at how the industry has morphed into what it is today before examining how it might progress in the next 80 years.

Even the registration process for the meeting is modern, as the LEA announced a "go green" initiative by which the organization will not be mailing paper registration materials. The registration forms, however, are available online, where you can check out additional events, including the organization's June educational program, which runs from June 8 to June 10 in Newport, RI.
