WASHINGTON–Jacqueline Cunningham has been appointed Virginia's new insurance commissioner by the State Corporation Commission.
Ms. Cunningham currently serves as the deputy commissioner of the life and health division of the SCC's Bureau of Insurance.
She will officially become commissioner on Jan. 1, 2011 upon the retirement of current Commissioner Alfred Gross, who has held the post for the past 14 years.
In addition to currently holding the position of deputy commissioner, Ms. Cunningham has served in various capacities at the Bureau since joining the State Corporate Commission in 1993.
The appointment was lauded by the American Insurance Association.
Eric Goldberg, AIA associate general counsel and manager, state programs, said AIA and its member companies "congratulate Commissioner-designate Cunningham on her appointment."
"Ms. Cunningham's 17 years of experience at the Bureau of Insurance will prove beneficial to consumers and insurers alike. We look forward to working with her and the bureau's staff to ensure that the Commonwealth's [property and casualty] insurance market remains stable and competitive," Mr. Goldberg said.
