A New York state judge ruled that former American International Group Chief Executive Maurice "Hank" Greenberg was liable for damages on a reinsurance contract that the state's attorney general said helped the insurer hide losses.
On Friday, both the New York Times and Reuters reported that New York State Supreme Court Justice Charles E. Ramos also found former AIG Chief Financial Officer Howard Smith liable on the transaction that involved Capco Reinsurance Co.
The scheme allegedly hid more than $200 million in losses from an auto warranty insurance program.
The losses were part of a restatement the company had to make for the years 2001 to 2004, and eventually led to the ouster of Mr. Greenberg in 2005.
