Brian Braley was elected chairman of the National Risk Retention Association (NRRA) at the group's annual conference in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Braley, vice president-legislative affairs of the Housing Authority Risk Retention Group (HARRG), succeeds Kim Wynkoop, legal counsel, Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company Risk Retention Group.

Sanford "Sandy" Elsass, president and chief executive officer, Uni-Ter Underwriting Management Corporation, was elected vice chairman.

NRRA told NU Online News Service that conference attendance was up 51 percent from last year. As of Oct. 5 there were 164 attendees compared to 108 in 2009. The annual meeting ends today.

Risk Retention Groups are authorized by the Liability Risk Retention Act of 1986 to write liability insurance nationally when licensed in a single state. They have grown into a major sector of the insurance industry with 251 companies that write $2.5 billion premium, NRRA said.
