The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies honored three legislators for their work on behalf of the insurance industry during the association's 115th annual meeting this year in San Diego.

The Indianapolis-based association honored Rep. Scott Garrett, R-N.J., with its Federal Legislator of the Year Award. It also honored State Senators Glenn Hegar, R-Texas, and Lena Taylor, D-Wis., with the State Legislator of the year award.

Mr. Garrett is serving his fourth term representing the 5th district in New Jersey. He is a member of the House Financial Services Committee. Prior to coming to Washington, he served in the New Jersey General Assembly as chairman of the Banking and Insurance Committee.

Mr. Hegar serves as chairman of the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission.

Ms. Taylor chairs the Wisconsin Senate Committee on Judiciary, Corrections, Insurance, Campaign Finance Reform and Housing.

"Congressman Garrett has been a champion for the free market and open competition on issues of importance to NAMIC member companies and their policyholders," Charles M. Chamness, NAMIC's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Throughout the debate over financial reform, he played a vital role for our industry by highlighting the difference between property and casualty insurance and other financial services providers."

Neil Alldredge, NAMIC's senior vice president of State & Policy Affairs, said, "Senators Hegar and Taylor are outstanding legislators committed to efficient, competitive and fair insurance markets. These elected officials have shown wisdom, leadership and strength of character to do what is right for the citizens of their states."

Mr. Alldredge added, "It has been nothing less than an honor to work with these two outstanding legislators."
