Richmond, Va.-based specialty insurer Markel Corp. announced that it has promoted John Latham to president, wholesale division, and Steve Girard to executive vice president, Southeast regional operations.
Mr. Latham, serving in a newly created position, will continue to oversee Markel's regional offices located in Virginia, Texas, Arizona, California, Illinois and New Jersey.
He has 43 years of experience in the insurance industry, and most recently he served as managing director, regional wholesale operations. He also led the Southeast region's operations since 2008.
Mr. Latham has been with Markel for the past seven years. He has held other leadership roles including president of Markel Re and chief information officer.
Prior to joining Markel, he was president and chief executive of Colony Insurance Companies.
"John has been carrying out the duties of running the division for some time now, and this promotion is in recognition of his efforts regarding the One Markel strategy," said Mike Crowley, president, Markel Corp. "With his years of extensive experience and his continued commitment to Markel and our wholesale partners, he is uniquely qualified to lead our regional organization."
In his new position as executive vice president, Southeast regional operations, Mr. Girard will oversee the regional operation from the company's headquarters in Richmond.
Mr. Girard joined Markel in 2008 as managing director of production and underwriting, Southeast region. Prior to joining Markel, he was senior vice president, branch manager for Willis Re in their Atlanta office for six years. His prior experience includes senior vice president and chief underwriting officer for Berkley Underwriting Partners.
