While Hurricane Earl grabs the headlines as it moves toward the U.S. East Coast, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking two other Atlantic storms, one of which is threatening some Caribbean islands.

Tropical Storm Fiona is passing north of the Leeward Islands, as of the NHC's 2:00 p.m. update. A tropical storm warning is in effect for St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.

Additionally, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla, as well as St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius.

The NHC said the watches and warnings may be discontinued later today.

The storm is heading northwest, but it is expected to take a turn to the north-northwest by late Thursday and move out to the open Atlantic.

Elsewhere, about 1,720 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, another storm system has formed into "Tropical Depression Nine." It is moving west at about 15 miles per hour, and the NHC said it is "likely" the storm will intensify into a tropical storm during the next 48 hours.
