British Petroleum (BP) said it made claim payments of nearly $400 million during the 16 weeks it managed claims related to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
BP transitioned its individual and business claims program to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) earlier this week.
BP reported the following claims activity since May 3, when it paid its first claim:
o Amount Paid: $399 million
o Claims Filed: 154,000
o Checks Written: 127,000
o Calls Received: 166,000
The GCCF assumed responsibility for individual and business claims Monday morning. BP said it will ensure that individuals or businesses contacting its existing claims phone lines or websites are referred to the GCCF.
During the first three weeks of August, BP said it made claims payments of $133 million. Payments to claimants in past months were $134 million in July, $93 million in June and $39 million in May, making this one of the largest claim payment programs conducted in a 16-week period, BP said.
According to BP's records, 7 percent, or $28.8 million of the amount paid, was for lost income/profits.
Funds were also paid out for:
o Undefined wage loss, $157 million
o Fishermen, $51 million
o Rental property owners, $48 million
o Commercial, $46 million
o Shrimpers, $30 million
o Oyster harvesters, $10 million
o Charter boat owners, $8 million
o Crabbers, $8 million
o Real estate sales, $4 million
o Seafood processors, $4 million
o Restaurant owners, $4 million
