Gov. Charlie Crist has issued a proclamation calling for a Special Session July 20-23 for the "sole and exclusive purpose of considering…the passage of a joint resolution to revise the Florida Constitution to prohibit the exploration for, the drilling for, the extraction of and the production of oil beneath Florida waters…"
Such an amendment requires approval by three-fifths of both the House and Senate to make it to the November ballot, where it must be approved by 60 percent of the voters.
In announcing his decision, Crist, the current governor and former Republican now running for the U.S. Senate as an Independent, said, "Politics has nothing to do with this."
In a statement commending his proclamation, CFO Alex Sink (who noted that she was the first statewide elected official to call for such a session, back on May 6) also said she wants the legislators to "tackle the urgent needs for our business owners and state, including much-needed small business relief, a more streamlined claims process, and the creation of an environmental endowment for additional research."
