Brett J. Barratt has been named the new commissioner of the Nevada Division of Insurance after serving as acting commissioner since June.
Mr. Barratt was named acting commissioner after former Commissioner Scott J. Kipper announced his resignation in May (http://www.property-casualty.com/News/2010/5/Pages/Kipper-Resigns-As-Nevada-Insurance-Commissioner.aspx?k=nevada), effective June 2.
Dianne Cornwall, director of the Nevada Department of Business & Industry–which houses the Division of Insurance–said of Mr. Barratt, "He has already proven his ability to lead during a transition, and I look forward to his ongoing oversight of this dynamic agency."
Mr. Barratt, an attorney, who took the post of chief insurance assistant last year, joined the insurance division in 2005 as insurance counsel and hearing officer. In October 2009, he became the chief insurance assistant for the division until he was named acting commissioner in June. He previously was in practice with Shea & Carlyon Ltd. law firm in Las Vegas.
Mr. Barratt said in a statement, "I am pleased to be appointed permanently to the commissioner position by Director Cornwall. Overseeing the division during this transition has been very rewarding, and I look forward to further reinforcing the agency's regulatory and consumer protection roles."
Mr. Kipper had been insurance commissioner since December 2008, when he replaced Acting Commissioner Betty Baker, who served after longtime Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman retired from the post.
A spokesperson for the division said in May that Mr. Kipper was leaving "to explore other opportunities."
