Humana, Inc., Government Relations Regional Director Harry Spring has been elected chair of the Florida Insurance Council (FIC) for a one-year term. Peter Corrigan of Florida Family Insurance Co. was chosen chair-elect and Marianne Eterno of Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Co. was elected treasurer. The officers and executive committee members were formally installed at the group's annual Summer Insurance Symposium held this year in Clearwater Beach. The symposium focused on the upcoming fall elections and how the election cycle impacted the recently completed 2010 legislative session.
As chair, Spring will direct the work of the council's executive committee and board of directors and work closely with FIC President Guy Marvin, Executive Vice President Sam Miller, and other FIC staff in providing member companies with educational programs, research, and representation before consumer, legislative, regulatory and judicial organizations. Also during the gathering, the John L. Riciardelli Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to former FIC President Gene Caruthers. The Wade G. Holland Award for Distinguished Service went to Corrigan, chair of the FIC Property Committee. The Harry G. Landrum Legislative Outstanding Legislative Leadership and Distinguished Service Award was presented to Sen. Michael Bennett (R-Bradenton) and Rep. Janet Long (D-St. Petersburg). Rep. Bill Proctor (R-St. Augustine) and Sen. Garrett Richter (R-Naples) were awarded the special leadership award, Against All Odds.
