California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner lost his bid to become the state's next governor, as former eBay CEO Meg Whitman defeated him in the gubernatorial Republican primary Tuesday night.

Media reports note that Ms. Whitman enjoyed a wide margin of victory. The San Francisco Chronicle has more on the primary results.

A statement to supporters on Mr. Poizner's campaign website reads, "I would like to personally thank you for your tremendous support through this uphill battle. As I traveled up and down the state, I met the most incredible people and heard the most amazing stories that have deeply touched me. Your kindness, generosity and loyalty have given me great hope that our journey has just begun and, together, we can rebuild California."
