The first named storm of the 2010 East Pacific hurricane season is not expected to cause significant insured losses after it made landfall near Guatemala's border with Mexico, causing mudslides, damaging more than 3,500 homes, and resulting in around 90 deaths in Guatemala.
Boston-based AIR Worldwide said insured losses are not expected to be significant because much of what was damaged in the storm is unlikely to have been insured.
The storm, Agatha, strengthened to a tropical storm before making landfall Saturday and weakening again to a tropical depression on Sunday.
Newark, Calif.-based RMS said the storm caused torrential rainfall that triggered flash flooding and landslides in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and southern Mexico. Death toll reports vary from around 80 to 125, RMS said, with Guatemala's Emergency Management Agency reporting a national death toll of 90 as of May 31.
