"Content" (as news and feature stories are referred to these days in the Brave, New World of the Web) does not generate itself, in case you didn't notice. The individual who is most responsible for our success in growing a vibrant online news service–Assistant Managing Editor Daniel Hays–is retiring this week, and his colleagues and readers alike are going miss him dearly.
Dan Hays tirelessly tracked down thousands of leads over the years to keep our magazine and online readers fully informed. An added bonus is that he always followed wherever the news led him. Dan is no toady, always striving to hold industry leaders accountable for their actions and misbehavior.
Dan is an old-fashioned newspaperman who was able to make the leap into the world of online journalism and excel in new media. We appreciate the way he always kept pushing us to go deeper into stories, to get additional sources or documents, and most of all to beat the competition.
Web traffic has grown exponentially under Dan's leadership. His nose for news and ability to craft compelling copy under tight deadlines is legendary, whatever technological challenges he had to overcome.
Dan has set a high standard for the rest of us to follow, and for that we thank him. For his leadership and friendship, we honor and salute him!
