Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. in New York said former CIGNA Corp. chief executive H. Edward Hanway has been elected to its board of directors.
Mr. Hanway, 57, served as chairman and chief executive officer of CIGNA from 2000 to the end of 2009. From 1999 to 2000, he served as president and chief operating officer. He was president of CIGNA HealthCare from 1996 to 1999, and from 1989 to 1996 was president of CIGNA International.
"We are delighted that Ed is joining us," said Stephen R. Hardis, MMC's chairman of the board. "His extensive insurance industry experience--as well as his significant efforts to improve the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care in the United States--make Ed an exceptional addition to the board."
The MMC board has determined that Mr. Hanway is independent from management under MMC's director independence standards, as well as for the purpose of New York Stock Exchange listed company standards.
He will serve on the board's audit and corporate responsibility committees.
With this election, MMC said its board now consists of 12 members, including 11 independent directors.
MMC is the parent company of insurance broker Marsh and reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter.
