There is currently no immediate permanent replacement for Maryland Insurance Commissioner Ralph Tyler, who leaves his post Friday to become chief counsel to the federal Food and Drug Administration, an official said.

If there is no permanent replacement named once Mr. Tyler leaves, there will be an interim appointment until a decision is made, said Shawn Adamec, press secretary for Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley.

He said with appointments like this, the objective is to find the right person, so there is no timeline set to fill the position.

Karen Barrow, spokesperson for the Maryland Insurance Administration, said the current term for insurance commissioner ends on May 2011, so any new appointment could be extended or replaced at that time.

Commissioner Tyler announced his plan to step down on Dec. 16. At the time, he said, "It has been a great privilege to serve the people of Maryland as insurance commissioner."

He added, "I am, of course, very excited about the new opportunity in public service which the position at the FDA provides."
