The International Insurance Society has announced five candidates from Israel, Australia, Brazil, the United Kingdom and Taiwan for the 2010 Insurance Hall of Fame Awards.
IIS in New York said the award will be presented to the winning candidate at a June 7 gala dinner during the 46th Annual IIS Seminar at Hotel Meli? Castilla, Madrid, Spain.
The candidates on the 2010 Insurance Hall of Fame ballot are:
o Professor Yehuda Kahane, a professor of insurance and finance, Faculty of Management, Tel-Aviv University
o Frank O'Halloran, chief executive officer QBE Insurance Group Ltd., Sydney, Australia
o Manuel P?voas, founder of Bradesco pension fund corporation, Sao Paulo, Brazil
o David Prosser, former group chief executive and director, Legal and General Group, London
o Charles Wang, founder of the Insurance Institute of the Republic of China, renamed Taiwan Insurance Institute, Taiwan
All of the nominees have an extensive background in the insurance industry. Describing the candidates, IIS called Mr. Kahane a "seminal thinker and a prominent insurance educator," researcher and entrepreneur. He has founded actuarial groups in Israel, Portugal and in the former Soviet Union countries.
Mr. O'Halloran was noted for being directly responsible for over 125 acquisitions by QBE Group and increasing the company value, now with a market capitalization over $20 billion, tenfold.
Mr. P?voas was described as an insurance industry trailblazer in both Portugal and Brazil, who in 1977 established and led Bradesco as the first private life and annuities firm in Brazil after the government legalized private pension funds and annuities. Mr. P?voas has founded and led insurance industry organizations in his country, his region and globally.
Sir David Prosser while CEO of Legal & General developed cost solutions to meet consumer savings and protection needs, expanded L&G's investment management business to Britain's largest institutional fund manager, and broadened its business from a traditional life assurance company to a life, pensions, savings and investment company. He was described as instrumental in pushing the Financial Services Authority to improve the fairness of its enforcement process.
Mr. Wang was called a catalyst for growth of the insurance industry in Taiwan and a force for the consolidation of the insurance institutions whose efforts led to establishment of Taiwan's first risk management and loss control services. He founded the Insurance Institute of the Republic of China, renamed Taiwan Insurance Institute, and served as its first president. He was CEO of Zurich Insurance Taiwan (1988-1998) and has been a professor of risk management and insurance at various universities in Taiwan.
