The New York Insurance Scholarship Foundation, Inc. said it has awarded its first scholarship to Kathleen Vuong, a junior at St. John's University studying actuarial science.
NYISF is a public charity initiated by the property and casualty insurance industry to support students studying the business of insurance in New York. The scholarship amounts to $1,500 for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The foundation noted that the insurance and risk management profession is aging at a rapid rate, "which presents a real impediment to the sustainability of the industry."
Richard Zick, chair of NYISF said, "The industry and insurance consumers have grown more complex. Talented future leaders must be cultivated to further our profession and in turn best serve the individuals we insure."
Regarding the choice of Ms. Vuong for the first scholarship, NYISF said she "carries a near perfect GPA [grade point average], is involved in numerous academic and community groups and causes and has a strong commitment to making positive contributions to the profession."
