Consumer groups seeking financial help so representatives can attend meetings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners can apply now for funding, the NAIC announced.

The organization said it is accepting applications for its 2010 Consumer Liaison Program, which "promotes consumer representation and interaction with the NAIC members by providing funding for qualified consumer representatives to participate in NAIC meetings."

Under the NAIC definition, a qualifying "consumer organization" is a "national, state, or local organization that serves to protect the interests of consumers as they relate to the regulation of insurance."

The NAIC said eligible candidates for the program must:

o Have a commitment to representing consumer interests in insurance regulation.

o Represent a nonprofit organization.

o Be willing to fully participate in NAIC national meetings and related conference calls.

o Have demonstrated expertise and experience on insurance-related issues addressed by the NAIC.

o Not have obligations or commitments to an industry that conflict with his/her responsibilities to represent consumer interests.

o Require NAIC funding in order to fully participate in NAIC national meetings and conference calls.

The application deadline is Dec. 31. More information is available online at http://www.naic.org/consumer_participation.htm.

Consumer organizations that do not want or need funding can apply for an unfunded consumer representative position, the NAIC noted.
