Kansas City, Mo.-based insurance broker Lockton said it has opened a second office in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, that will expand its energy and reinsurance capabilities in South America.

The broker already has a location in Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of 10 nations where the firm has offices. It also has a wholly owned foreign entity license to operate in China.

Lockton said it recruited a four-person team for the Rio de Janeiro operation. The team includes Paula Malafaia, who joins Lockton from Colemont, to serve as the office's retail executive and Antonio de Novaes Neto as director for Lockton Re in Rio de Janeiro. He previously worked in leadership roles with Bradesco Seguros Group, reinsurance broker CatalystRe and with the IRB, Brazil's state-owned reinsurer.

Lockton International Chief Executive Officer Julian James said, "Our growth in Brazil reflects the increasing demand for localized insurance and risk management expertise in South American markets. We look forward to providing excellent client service to companies in the region."
