Hurricane Jimena is currently a "strong Category 4 hurricane" and continues toward the Baja California Peninsula, according to risk modeler RMS.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall sometime today and is "on the threshold of Category 5 status," RMS said.

The storm is moving northwest and is expected to head north-northwest and increase its forward speed. This will put Jimena on track to travel over the southern portion of the Baja California Peninsula today, RMS said.

RMS added that after landfall, Jimena is expected to track in a northerly direction, emerging over the Gulf of California on Thursday evening. As it approaches the coast, RMS said Jimena will track over an area of lower oceanic heat content and weaken. It could, however, still be a tropical storm by the time it emerges over the Gulf of California and makes a second landfall in northwest Mexico on Friday.

RMS said the National Hurricane Center suggests maximum rainfall accumulations of up to 15 inches and dangerous storm surge, which could affect the peninsula over the next few days.
