Golf ball-sized hail — along with strong winds — recently caused damages across the Denver area that totaled $350 million in insured losses. The storm uprooted trees, cut off power to many homes, and did serious damage to cars, sheds, and anything else located out in the weather.
An estimated 32,900 of the nearly 52,400 claims that have been made so far are homeowners' insurance claims. "This summer, Mother Nature has reminded Coloradans that we live in 'hail alley,' where strong storms can cause hundreds of millions of dollars in insured damage," said Carole Walker, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.
Colorado has already accumulated more than $511 million in insured losses this year, but this latest total does not top the levels reached by one single storm back in 1990. That storm caused $625 million in insured damages and remains at the top of the list of Colorado's most costly storms.
