New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine has appointed Neil Jasey as interim commissioner of the Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI), effective immediately.

Mr. Jasey, husband of N.J. Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, replaces former DOBI Commissioner Steven Goldman, who recently departed to return to private law practice.

Mr. Jasey previously had a career in insurance and financial services until he retired in 2004. From 1975 to 2004, he worked at Prudential Insurance Company of America, rising to the position of vice president and deputy general counsel in 2001.

In a statement, Mr. Jasey said, "I am really pleased to have this opportunity for public service. I appreciate the confidence Governor Corzine has shown in me by making this appointment. I'm honored to be invited into his cabinet and I am looking forward to joining my efforts with others in the Department of Banking and Insurance during these challenging and potentially transformational times."

DOBI spokesman Marshall McKnight said Mr. Jasey will have the interim title until he is officially confirmed by the State Senate.

Mr. Goldman, who was appointed as DOBI commissioner by Gov. Corzine in 2006, joined New York-based law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP on July 15.

Prior to his term as commissioner, Mr. Goldman was a senior partner at Sills, Cummis & Gross, where he worked on a wide range of corporate law matters for 22 years and served on the firm's management committee, according to Kramer Levin.

At Kramer Levin, Mr. Goldman will advise corporate, banking and insurance clients, said Paul S. Pearlman, managing partner of Kramer Levin. "[Mr. Goldman's] leadership on these complex issues will be a great benefit to the firm and our clients," he said in a statement.

Mr. Goldman added, "Joining Kramer Levin provides me with an exceptional platform to capitalize on my experience and knowledge in advising a range of clients throughout the country. It's a great opportunity to work alongside some of the nation's leading lawyers to tackle many ongoing challenges."
