The Hartford named Juan Andrade president and chief operating officer of the company's property and casualty operations July 16, succeeding Neal Wolin who left the company in February for a White House position and is now deputy secretary at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Andrade, 43, a native of Colombia, had been interim co-leader of the property-casualty operations with Jonathan Bennett since Wolin left.
Andrade, who came to the United States in 1975 and became a citizen in 1985, joined The Hartford in 2006 as head of the property-casualty claims organization. He was named executive vice president for sales and distribution in 2008.
The Hartford, suffering from investment losses and lowered financial ratings, had considered selling its property-casualty unit this spring. Ultimately, the company decided to sell off some smaller businesses and exit international operations, but remain a life and property-casualty insurance company.
The business Andrade will oversee has about 18,000 employees companywide.
Andrade will continue to report directly to Ramani Ayer, The Hartford's chairman and chief executive officer, and will serve as a member of the Office of the Chairman.
The Hartford hired Andrade from Progressive Insurance in 2006, where he had held positions as general manager of the Gulf Coast region and national catastrophe leader. Previously, he had worked in personal lines in the Caribbean for American International Group.
