Scottish Gangster Ian "Blink" McDonald, 48, continues to not-so-subtly contest Aviva's refusal to pay 26,000 pounds to replace his Mercedes Kompressor, which was firebombed in May.
The infamous hood lovingly referred to his Mercedes as his "Blinkmobile." Just weeks before this latest arson attack, hit men placed a crude device under the motor and later slashed McDonald in a botched murder attempt. Fearing for his safety, CID officers warned McDonald to dump the ride before it was torched. A defiant McDonald chose not to heed their advice, saying "there's no way I'm getting rid of the Blinkmobile."
Now McDonald is publicly bemoaning the fact that his insurer has not yet compensated him for the loss, claiming that his previous history and criminal record seem to be playing more of a role in their decision than his true eligibility.
At the time of the May 16 firebombing, McDonald was serving time in jail over a breach of the peace rap. He had vowed to deliver his own brand of justice to the responsible parties. A loss adjuster for Aviva wrote McDonald, insinuating that he knew the person(s) responsible and that not disclosing the identity to the police or the insurer constituted a breach of policy. Cunningham Lindsey UK also criticized McDonald for ignoring police advice to dispose of the high-profile vehicle.
"I don't know who petrol bombed my car, as I was in the police station at the time," McDonald responded. "I never made any claim to do with the bomb, so it's not relevant to insurers. The police can't tell people to get rid of their cars. As far as I'm concerned, the police failed in their duty to watch my car while I was in the nick."
Aviva countered, accusing McDonald of "a breach of utmost good faith." According to the insurer's records, McDonald had not filed any claims. Moreover, a loss adjuster for Aviva said that McDonald claimed to have been "living abroad" when he had in fact been incarcerated.
A ceasefire anytime soon is unlikely.
