The Public Entity Risk Institute, a nonprofit risk management training and education group, said it has released a book with the latest research and developments in emergency management.
The publication is a compilation of presentations made by industry experts during the 2008 Annual Emergency Management in Higher Education Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said Fairfax, Va.-based PERI.
Titled, "Ideas From An Emerging Field: Teaching Emergency Management in Higher Education," was released at the 2009 Higher Education Conference last week in Emmitsburg, Md.
"The contributing authors selected are all extremely practiced and knowledgeable in their respective areas of expertise, and significantly contribute to the theory and practice of emergency management," said B. Wayne Blanchard, Program Manager of FEMA's Emergency Management Higher Education Program.
The book, he said, should be "a valuable addition to collegiate studies and aid educators and administrators as they train and prepare the next generation of emergency managers."
The conference presented the latest research and expertise related to hazards, disasters and other emergency management topics, with a special focus on disaster reduction, mitigation, prevention, and preparedness, according to PERI.
Thirteen papers from the conference were included in the publication and topics covered included incorporating a social problems perspective into emergency management curriculum, the importance of teaching disaster resilience, disaster field research for graduate students, the history of FEMA, and challenges the emergency management higher education community face regarding external and internal validity.
The book is available in the PERI Bookstor, www.riskinstitute.org/bookstore for $40 with an additional discount available to students.
