The Risk and Insurance Management Society said "hot topics" for its annual conference include subprime lawsuits, dealing with economic recovery, and how to determine the effectiveness of an insurer.

The RIMS 2009 Annual Conference & Exhibition is scheduled for April 19-23 in Orlando, Fla.

Mary Roth, RIMS executive director, said, "The financial industry fallout of 2008 has forced companies to rethink the importance of risk management as a strategic element of their business plans."

Hot topics include:

o Glen Boyls, management consultant, AMX International Inc. speaking on "Navigating the Financial Tsunami"–a session providing recommendations to help companies prepare for economic recovery, taking an enterprisewide view of the financial and operational impacts that will most likely affect organizations.

o Attorney Cort T. Malone, Anderson Kill & Olick, will address "Five Questions to Ask Before Switching Insurance Companies." His talk will discuss how re-examining existing insurance at this point is a matter of due diligence, with risk managers recognizing that the decision to switch insurance companies–or stay put–should not be made purely on the basis of price and financial strength.

o Robert M. Horkovich, an Anderson Kill & Olick attorney, will discuss "Insurance Coverage for Subprime Mortgage Lawsuits" and how policyholders seeking protection under their policies need to be prepared to counter insurance industry defenses against coverage and know how to counter these defenses.

o Reynold Siemens, partner, Proskauer Rose, will discuss "D&O Insurance During the Economic Crisis," a talk explaining how directors and officers insurance may be a company's most valuable insurance asset during this economic downturn. He will discuss what D&O insurers are thinking, how to negotiate for better terms, whether it's time to switch carriers, and what precautions to take when changing carriers.

In addition to the hot topic sessions, RIMS said the conference will feature more than 400 industry experts leading 120 sessions on a variety of topics including captive insurers, claims management, disaster recovery, enterprise risk management, finance, globalization, legislation and regulatory issues, and loss control.

Among the general session presenters is leadership consultant Dennis N.T. Perkins, Ph.D., author of "Leading at the Edge: Leadership Lessons from the Extraordinary Saga of Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition," who will present his 10 strategies for success based on effective leadership in demanding environments.

Feb. 20. is the deadline for an early registration discount. More information is available at www.RIMS.org/RIMS2009.
