Markel Names Glisson To CAO Post

Richmond, Va.-based specialty insurer Markel Corp. announced the promotion today of Britt Glisson to chief administrative officer.

Prior to his promotion Mr. Glisson served as president/chief operating officer of Markel Insurance Company, a post he has held since 1996. He has worked at Markel since 1990, first as chief financial officer and later as president and chief operating officer of Essex Insurance Company.

The company said the new CAO will be responsible for assuring efficient, cost-effective operations for Markel Corp. in North America.

Alan Kirshner, chairman of Markel Corp., said Mr. Glisson “has played an integral role in a number of initiatives that have helped us grow our business and streamline efficiencies. We are confident that his longtime operations experience and administrative background make him the ideal choice to lead our efforts as chief administrative officer.”

Also today, the company announced that Mike Crowley, previously president of Willis HRH North America, has been appointed president of Markel Corp.'s Specialty Division.

Prior to Willis HRH Mr. Crowley held senior positions with Johnson & Higgins and Palmer Cay. Markel said he has more than 30 years experience in the insurance industry.

Mr. Crowley will be responsible for Markel Corp. specialty insurance business, which includes Markel Insurance Company and Markel American Insurance Company. “With his knowledge of our industry and leadership experience, we look forward to the innovative perspective Mike will surely bring to his new position with Markel,” said Mr. Kirshner.

Markel Corporation markets and underwrites specialty insurance products and programs for a variety of niche markets including: wind- and earthquake-exposed commercial properties, liability coverage for highly specialized professionals, horse mortality and other horse-related risks, personal watercrafts, high-valued motorcycles, aviation, and energy-related activities.
