The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents said Kenneth R. Auerbach was selected as its new president during a meeting of its board of directors in Austin, Texas.

Mr. Auerbach, a past president of the Professional Insurance Agents of New Jersey Inc., is managing director and general counsel for E&K Agency in Eatontown, N.J.

“As PIA members, we must continue to fulfill our mission statement of protecting and defending our members and their livelihoods,” Mr. Auerbach said in a statement, noting the association remains strong because it focuses on the issues that matter most to members and is always steadfast in defense of its members' business interests.

“We haven't flinched in the defense of our members. Not against attorneys general. Not against the Treasury Department. Not against the NAIC. Not against Congress,” he said.

Gary C. Rygiel, president of New Jersey's PIA branch, said: “Ken has worked tirelessly on behalf of independent agents throughout New Jersey and the country. We have proudly watched him rise in the association and develop into an exceptional leader. Ken will be an outstanding president and will effectively lead PIA through this complex time in the industry and for the entire country.”

The association also named:

o Jon D. Spalding of Perry, Mich., president-elect.

o Brian Marino of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., vice president/treasurer.

o Fred Thomas of Stevensville, Mont., secretary/assistant treasurer.

o Robert P. Page of Houma, La., immediate past-president.

Each of the officers serves a one-year term that began Oct. 1.

The association also named The Motorists Insurance Group as the recipient of its “2008 Company Award of Excellence.”

The honor goes to companies committed to PIA, the agency system, and to furthering the interests of professional insurance agents by creating a better business environment.

Founded in 1928, Motorists Mutual Insurance Company is a unit of The Motorists Insurance Group based in Columbus, Ohio. The group of companies is composed of nine property and casualty, life and brokerage companies that operate in 38 states.
