Alabama Insurance Commissioner Walter Bell–a prominent player on the international regulatory stage who served as president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners last year–announced he will leave his post at the end of the month.
Mr. Bell has not yet said what he plans to do after he leaves the Alabama Department of Insurance.
"Walter's deep knowledge and understanding of the insurance industry has been a tremendous asset to the people of Alabama," Gov. Robert Riley, the Republican who appointed Mr. Bell in January 2003, said in a statement.
Since finishing his term as NAIC president, Mr. Bell has chaired the organization's International Insurance Relations Committee. In June, Mr. Bell became a director of the Bermuda Monetary Authority.
Mr. Bell also has been vice chair of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, based in Basel, Switzerland, as well as a limited partner in the Mobile Bay Bears Baseball Team, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Before Mr. Bell joined the Alabama department, he was an executive at the MONY Group Inc. in New York.
