The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. has named Gary Y. Kusumi president of the company's personal lines business.

Mr. Kusumi, 61, will be responsible for the company's personal lines operations, including products, pricing, service and underwriting strategies, as well as growth and profitability. He will work out of The Hanover's headquarters in Worcester, Mass., and will serve as a member of the company's executive leadership team.

Mr. Kusumi came to The Hanover from GMAC Insurance, where he served as president and chief executive officer of the company's personal lines business. Prior that GMAC, he served as president and chief executive officer of the Windsor Group and president of Leader National Group personal lines companies of Great American Insurance Group in Cincinnati.

Mr. Kusumi is a past chairman of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and served on the safety advisory committee for the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

"We are extremely pleased to have Gary join us," said Marita Zuraitis, president of The Hanover's property and casualty companies. "Gary is well known and well respected throughout the industry. With his knowledge, experience and proven leadership skills, he is going to be a great asset to our company from day one, helping us to build on our strengths and our strong market position as the preferred total account writer for growing independent agents."

Mr. Kusumi replaces Jim Hyatt, who assumes the position of regional president of strategic partnerships. In Mr. Hyatt's new role, a company spokeswoman said, he will drive and develop franchise relationships with larger partner agents.
