The New York-based International Insurance Society Inc. said its annual meeting beginning July 13 in Taipei, Taiwan will feature Taiwanese Vice Premier Chiu Cheng-hsiung as keynote speaker.
IIS said the vice premier will deliver his talk July 14. The gathering, which runs from July 13-16, is due to be held at the Grand Formosa Regent.
The Taiwanese insurance industry serves as host for the meeting in cooperation with the Financial Supervisory Commission of Taiwan.
IIS said Mr. Chiu's speech will highlight profound political and financial changes that have taken place in Taiwan since 1974, when the IIS Seminar was last held there.
"We are very pleased to have a keynote speaker of his stature at our meeting as it signifies the rising importance of the insurance industry not only in Taiwan, but in the entire Asian region," said a statement from Patrick Kenny, IIS president and chief executive officer of the IIS.
"The support of our Taiwanese hosts has been overwhelming, resulting in one of our most successful annual seminars to date, and Mr. Chiu's participation certainly is a testament to the importance of our meeting and the vitality of the Taiwanese insurance industry," added Mr. Kenny.
IIS said Mr. Chiu has served as vice premier and concurrent chairperson of the Consumer Protection Commission in the Cabinet of President Ma Ying-jeou since May.
From 1996 to 2000 Mr. Chiu was the minister of finance and since then, until his appointment as vice premier, he served as board chairman, Grand Cathay Securities Corporation; chairman, EnTie Commercial Bank; and honorary board chairman, EnTie Commercial Bank. Mr. Chiu holds a Ph.D. degree in economics from Ohio State University.
The Financial Supervisory Commission of Taiwan was established on July 1, 2004 to promote an integrated financial supervision. The primary objectives of the commission are to consolidate the supervision of banking, securities and insurance sectors and to act as a single regulator for all of these industries.
IIS provides a world forum for leading insurance executives, academics and others interested in insurance to share interests and ideas on timely global issues.
