The Newark, Calif.-based modeling firm Risk Management Solutions said today it is making its analysis of catastrophe events publicly available on its Web site.
RMS said the RMS Cat Updates information is available at www.rms.com/Catastrophe/Catupdates.
The site was reporting today on the Ophir wildfire in California. RMS said so far the fire has burned properties in Butte County and continues to threaten hundreds of homes.
RMS said the fire, which started yesterday, had burned 1,600 acres and destroyed 21 residences and 28 outbuildings in Palmero. The blaze was said to be 50 percent contained and burning in an easterly direction, leaving about 3,000 structured threatened.
Neena Saith, catastrophe response manager for RMS, said, "Historically our business has focused on the insurance market, but we believe other industries affected by catastrophic events can also benefit from our timely analysis.
"The service is a one-stop shop for scientific analyses and damage reports, and will also benefit those serving humanitarian needs. By offering public access to our Cat Updates, we can provide guidance to any impacted industry, from energy companies with operations in hurricane-stricken areas to traders concerned about an event's likely effect on food prices."
As well as publishing regular catastrophe updates, RMS said it is introducing a suite of tools–the Enhanced Catastrophe Response Service–that provides real-time scientific information prior to, during and after major events to promote effective response to global disasters.
