The National Insurance Crime Bureau and the Illinois Insurance Association said they will convene an Insurance Fraud Summit Wednesday to discuss and develop strategies for fighting insurance fraud in Illinois.

Attending the session at the Marriott Schaumburg, Schaumburg, Ill., will be insurance industry professionals, regulators, law enforcement and others, the organizations said.

Among those scheduled to speak are Michael Hessler, deputy director of the Illinois Division of Insurance, and Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart.

“NICB believes the most effective way to fight insurance fraud is to formulate solutions to the problem with the collective efforts of insurers, law enforcement and government agencies, prosecutors, legislators and insurance industry organizations,” said Robert Bryant, chief executive officer and president of Des Plaines-based NICB.

The bureau said the session will hear panels comprised of industry leaders, investigators and prosecutors address insurance fraud issues including bodily injury, medical provider fraud, staged auto accidents and towing oversight in addition to contractor fraud and public adjuster issues.

A concluding session will focus on the challenges faced by prosecutors in fighting fraud.

“The IIA is pleased to partner with the NICB in this important industry event,” said Kevin Martin, Illinois Insurance Association executive director.

“NICB's expertise and informational capabilities on insurance fraud combined with the IIA's leadership on legislative and public awareness issues here in Illinois makes for a potent combination to help fight this problem, ” said Mr. Martin.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau, a national, not-for-profit organization, is supported by approximately 1,000 property-casualty insurance companies, including many who write business in Illinois. Working with member companies and law enforcement, NICB investigates organized criminal conspiracies dealing with insurance fraud and vehicle theft.

The Illinois Insurance Association is an insurance trade association which represents its member companies before the Illinois legislative and executive branches as well as the media.
