XL Insurance in Hartford, Conn., the insurance arm of Bermuda-based XL Capital Ltd., said Bernard R. Horovitz has been promoted to chief underwriting officer of its global professional lines of business.

Mr. Horovitz, the company said, will report to John Glancy, XL Insurance chief underwriting officer.

Mr. Horovitz served as XL Insurance's chief actuary for professional, which provides insurance indemnity for directors and officers, architects, engineers, and other professionals against a variety of risks, including errors and omissions and employment practices.

In his new role, the company said, Mr. Horovitz will oversee all operations in the professional business unit, supervising a staff of more than 185 professionals throughout XL Insurance's global enterprise.

Mr. Glancy said Mr. Horovitz is a talent with more than 21 years as a property-casualty actuary and expertise extending to all phases of the insurance operation, from underwriting to marketing, claims and product management.

Before joining XL Insurance in 2000 as global pricing and reserving actuary for professional lines, Mr. Horovitz was assistant vice president and chief actuary of Chubb Executive Risk's Business Support Capabilities Department.
