The American Association of Managing General Agents announced that Baron Garcia, a former president of the organization, died Feb. 25 of stomach cancer. He was 58.
Funeral services were to be held today at First Presbyterian Church, 1001 S. Rankin St., Edmond, Okla.
Mr. Garcia, the AAMGA president in 2001, was the president and chief executive officer of the Oklahoma General Agency in Oklahoma City, which he purchased in 1988.
The King of Prussia, Pa.-based AAMGA called Mr. Garcia “an inspiration and a leader to the AAMGA and the wholesale insurance market” as well as “a mentor to young insurance professionals and other industry peers around the country.”
AAMGA said, “We will always remember Baron as being a managing general agent committed to customer service, innovation, strategic growth and education.”
Mr. Garcia was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., and was a graduate of Oklahoma State University.
The Oklahoma General Agency Web site said Mr. Garcia, who was an officer of the agency in 1988, negotiated a purchase of the company from former owner Marie Welch and her family, and he continued to operate it as a family business as Ms. Welch had done before him.
According to the Web site, he coupled a philosophy of service and innovation with an aggressive marketing philosophy, advances in technology and a comprehensive acquisition program, leading the agency to over $25 million in sales and causing numerous new insurance companies to enter the state.
Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife, Ty, and daughters Rachelle, Jenny and Stephanie as well as six grandchildren.
The family has requested donations to be made in lieu of flowers to Search Ministries Inc., 200 N. Harvey Ave, Suite 716, OKC, Okla. 73102.
Notes of condolence can be sent to the family at 3215 Dutch Forest Lane, Edmond, OK 73013.
