Massachusetts Commissioner of Insurance Nonnie Burnes will be the keynote speaker next month at the annual Ratemaking Seminar of the Arlington, Va.-based Casualty Actuarial Society, the organization said.

CAS said Ms. Burnes will give her view of the current regulatory issues in Massachusetts, including the sweeping reforms of the personal automobile insurance market, coastal property insurance availability and affordability, and the status of the new mandatory health insurance program for Massachusetts residents.

The CAS event is scheduled for March 17-18, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Boston.

Insurance Information Institute President Robert P. Hartwig will provide a comprehensive overview of the cyclical forces driving the property-casualty insurance industry during the seminar's general session.

Among the key factors to be reviewed by Mr. Hartwig are trends in profitability, underwriting performance, ratings and financial strength, investment volatility, the tort system, and developments in the regulatory and legislative arena.

The Ratemaking Seminar provides a forum for the presentation and discussion of ratemaking methods, concepts and issues.

Sessions are available for insurance professionals with ratemaking knowledge levels that vary from limited to advanced, and the seminar provides an opportunity for actuaries, underwriters and other insurance professionals to further their continuing education, CAS said.

Over 50 different sessions are listed covering data management and technology, workers' compensation, personal and commercial lines, predictive modeling, regulatory issues, reinsurance, underwriting, and risk and capital management.

Both CAS members and nonmembers may register. Registration information is online at www.casact.org.

The Casualty Actuarial Society lists its mission as the advancement of actuarial science through a focus on research and education. Its 4,500 members include experts in property-casualty insurance, reinsurance, finance, risk management and enterprise risk management.
