Novato, Calif.-based Fireman's Fund Insurance Company said its corporate philanthropy program, Fireman's Fund Heritage, awarded more than $6.3 million in grants last year to U.S. fire departments.

The insurer said more than 400 fire departments and fire service organizations received individual grants. The money was used to help provide funding for needed equipment, training and community education programs.

Equipment and gear included thermal imaging cameras, turnout gear, extrication equipment, portable radios, ventilation saws, nozzles, self-contained breathing apparatus sets and medical defibrillators.

Under the program, Fireman's Fund employees and its network of independent agents work together to identify needs at local fire departments. Fireman's said grants are issued, in part, to fill the voids left by growing budget cuts. Donations average $20,000 but can range from $5,000 to more than $100,000.

Since the program was created in 2004, Fireman's Fund Heritage has awarded more than $16.46 million in grants.

Fireman's Fund is a member of the Allianz Group.
