XL Insurance, the global insurance operation of Bermuda-based XL Capital Ltd., said today it has signed a six-year agreement to have the Hartford Conn. Civic Center named the XL Center.

The venue includes an exhibition hall and the 16,500-seat Veteran's Memorial Coliseum where the University of Connecticut's men's and women's basketball teams play as well as the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolfpack team. It also is the site for music events, shows and conferences.

XL's agreement is with Northland AEG LLC.

John Glancy, chief underwriting officer of XL Insurance's Global Professional unit, based in Hartford, said the city is considered to be “where the U.S. insurance industry began and remains a very influential business center for our industry today. The city offers us a strategically central location in the Northeast to conduct our worldwide business and gives us access to a talented, educated workforce.”

He added, “XL Insurance has a significant office presence and history in Hartford where many businesses and their insurance brokers come to conduct business. We have watched Hartford steadily rebuild over the years, and we are very proud to be part of the renaissance of the city.”

He said the company is working with Northland AEG “to develop a fresh, new appearance for the XL Center in the coming weeks. We look forward to unveiling and celebrating its new name and new look.”
