Mitchel Gennaoui has been appointed chief of the New York Insurance Department Consumer Services Bureau and assistant deputy superintendent, it was announced yesterday.

New York State Insurance Superintendent Eric R. Dinallo said Mr. Gennaoui "has been an outstanding member of our department for many years. He provides strong leadership in our Consumer Services Bureau, which has a vital role in protecting the interests of all New York consumers."

Mr. Gennaoui as bureau chief is responsible for directing all operations of the bureau, which receives and investigates consumer complaints, answers consumer questions about insurance, provides disaster assistance services, and conducts consumer education and outreach programs.

Previously, Mr. Gennaoui was assistant bureau chief, responsible for the operation of the bureau's offices in New York City, Albany, Buffalo and Mineola, and overseeing major cases and investigations, legislation and disaster assistance. He joined the department in 1976.
