Willis Group Holdings said it has named Flavio Piccolomini chief executive officer for continental Europe, including the Nordic region.

Mr. Piccolomini, an economics graduate from the Bocconi University of Milan, has spent his entire 18-year career at Willis, where he started as a trainee in the London headquarters in 1990.

In 2001 Mr. Piccolomini was appointed managing director of global financial and executive risks. In 2003 he was made co-managing director of global markets international. He returned to Italy to head up the Italian operations as CEO of Willis Italia Spa.

He will report to Allan Gribben, CEO of Willis International, and will be based in Milan.

Mr. Piccolomini was the CEO of Willis' Italian operations, Willis Italia Spa. Guido De Spirt will replace Mr. Piccolomini there.

Willis said continental Europe has approximately 2,000 associates.

The London-headquartered insurance brokerage firm also announced that its Eastern European countries will form part of a new emerging markets division led by Sarah Turvill, chairman of Willis international and CEO of Willis emerging markets. Willis said the group will build on its existing strength in Asia, the Middle East, Russia, Eastern Europe and South Africa.
